Brain on Love: The Hidden Chemicals that Connect Us

Brain on Love: The Hidden Chemicals that Connect Us

Ah, Valentine’s Day. We exchange cards, gift flowers and toast to love. Love is one of the most universal and consuming of human emotions. For centuries we have sung about it, created paintings and plays about it, and last weekend, we celebrated it. As social animals, we have a human instinct to seek and build love.

    Just Say No-

    Just Say No-

I’m sure this isn’t news to you, but sometimes we moms have a difficult time saying no. You would think that with all that practice during the Terrible Two’s, we would have that word down pat. “No” is arguably the most powerful word in the dictionary. But we can’t seem to utter it when we

  • Annual Wellness Exams (AWE)

Annual wellness exams can last from 30 minutes to an hour, and typically include a physical exam, a complete overview of your personal and family medical history, and a discussion about healthy lifestyle choices and habits, all aimed at keeping you healthy! Dr. P feels that it is important to go over a patient’s general health status — how they’re feeling, any complaints they have, what they’re doing in their personal and professional lives that could put them at risk for health issues.

  • FAA Pilot Exams (FAA)

Dr. P has been a senior FAA examiner for almost 30 years. Dr. P is a pilot himself, so he understands the concerns of a pilot in approaching the examination as well as the concerns of the FAA for both the pilot’s and the public’s safety and well-being. Dr. P wants to be a strong advocate for all of “his pilots”. Dr. P places a priority on these exams and tries to make them available at the pilot’s convenience and oftentimes, “same day” if at all possible considering the pilot’s often hectic schedules. Dr. P welcomes all pilots, private, military, and commercial!

  • Well Men and Women Exams

As in the AWE, these exams are especially aimed at issues that specifically affect both men and women, as well as considering special issues that may plague “just men” or “just women”. They aim at trying to help the men and women in this practice maintain a healthy, active, youthful lifestyle as they age.

  • Well-Child Exams

The well-child exam is an opportunity to evaluate the child and address questions about your child’s development, behavior, and general well-being. Many parents also use this well-child visit as a time to discuss immunizations, and to see how much their child has grown since their last check-up. Dr. P uses this time to also discuss common concerns with parents such as eating, sleeping, toilet training, and social behaviors, as well as attention and learning difficulties. This type of visit differs from a “sick visit” in which you might bring your child to Dr. P for a specific problem like an allergic reaction, an ear infection, or breathing trouble, etc.

Dr. P feels it is important to have regular well-child visits where parents ( and the child) can raise the concerns that matter most to you and your child. Dr. P’s 35+ years in practice may make him an expert in child care, but he recognizes that the parents are THE expert on their child, and that is why Dr. P feels that a team approach can best develop top physical, emotional, and developmental health for your child.

  • Sports and School Physical Exams

A preparticipation ( or sports) exam is often required for any child who wants to take part in a school athletic and other activities. This may also be needed for an organized sports activity outside of school. They are usually necessary before starting an activity. If your child is injured while playing the sport, he or she may need to have another exam for permission to return to the sport or activity. How often your child needs to have an exam depends on the activity and the local school guidelines governing the activity. In many cases, annual exams are required.

Dr. P feels that a  preparticipation exam is  important! A preparticipation exam is used to:

    • Find any medical or physical problems that could make participation risky
    • Find any medical or physical problems that could be fixed to make participation a more beneficial experience
    • Help maintain health and safety
    • Make sure your child is fit enough to participate in the activity
    • Teach your child about the activity
    • Meet all the legal and insurance requirements for participation in the activity
  • Pre-Operative Clearance Exams

A history and physical examination, focusing on risk factors for cardiac, pulmonary and infectious complications, and a determination of a patient’s functional capacity, are essential to any preoperative evaluation. In addition, the type of surgery influences the overall perioperative risk and the need for further cardiac , pulmonary, radiologic, or laboratory evaluation. Dr. P and your surgeon feel these are necessary to help you approach surgery safely and in an effort to help speed post-operative recovery. Dr. P feel that it is important to discover risks that you may face, before you are on the operating or procedure table!

  • Weight Management

Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and can help you prevent and control many diseases and conditions. If you are overweight or obese, you are at higher risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers. That is why maintaining a healthy weight is so important: It helps you lower your risk for developing these problems, and helps you feel good about yourself, and gives you more energy to enjoy life.

Dr. P feels that just as every patient is different, the approach to help you with your weight loss program must be different too. Dr. P will work with you to tailor make a program, just perfect for you using multiple modalities from behavior modification and counseling, nutritional counseling, pharmaceutical options, and natural approaches, all the way to exploring and advising you about surgical options.

  • Anti-Aging Medicine

The A4M (American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine) says that “Anti-aging medicine is the pinnacle of biotechnology joined with advanced clinical preventive medicine. The specialty is founded on the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders, and diseases. It is a healthcare model promoting innovative science and research to prolong the healthy lifespan in humans. As such, anti-aging medicine is based on principles of sound and responsible medical care that are consistent with those applied in other preventive health specialties. The anti-aging medical model aims to both extend lifespan as well as prolong health span – the length of time that we are able to live productively and independently.”

Dr. P feels that this should be part of all care that you receive, and certainly is part of his Annual Wellness and Child care examinations.

  • BioIdentical Hormone Replacement Evaluations and Treatment

Dr. P has been involved in this for more than 25 years and is considered an expert in his approach to optimize an individual’s hormone status. Traditionally it was felt that this dealt with women alone, but it also deals with men and younger patients where this is an issue due to an inherited deficiency state or a secondary problem. Most evaluations though are for adult women and men who desire to feel better , to be less fatigued and to live a more active life-style. Dr. P has dealt with these issues utilizing a patient centered approach whether it involves a strictly nutritional or a hormone replacement approach,  using natural regimens involving more natural hormones ( tablets, capsules, troches, creams, pellets, etc.). In the past 10 years he has been recognized by two leaders in the field, by becoming affiliated with these organizations….both by invitation only, issued to the top providers in the field. These two groups are BioTE and ForeverHealth. Learn more: Forever Health

  • Integrative and Nutritional Medicine

According to Duke University School of Medicine, “The practice of integrative and  nutritional medicine takes a holistic approach to wellness recognizing that the foundation for optimal health and healing begins with a health promoting diet.

Our bodies are biochemical environments and everything we put into them in terms of the foods we choose to eat or not eat makes a difference. These choices also determine, to a great extent, if we are moving towards wellness or away from it. For many they will also determine whether we age well or poorly and what, if any, chronic diseases we will face.

Integrative nutrition and medicine consultations at B2B can deal with

    Heart Disease
    Cancer Treatment / Survival Support
    Vegetarian Eating
    Healthy Aging
    Anti Inflammatory Diet
    Food Sensitivities
    High Blood Pressure
    Metabolic Syndrome

  • Psychiatric Medical Management

According to a major national publication, over a third of all mental-health care in the U.S. is now provided by primary-care doctors, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, and family practitioners, and this is due to shortage nationally of local psychiatrists, and due to their desire to enlist the aid of primary care physicians. This means that much of the management of psychiatric medications has fallen on the shoulders of primary care doctors. Dr. P has another reason for his special interest in this field. He graduated from UNC as a psychology major and has had a lifelong interest in psychology, psychiatry and human behavior and he spends many hours on a yearly basis attending seminars and education programs to enable him to better serve these patients who are often shunned by many of the other primary care providers in the area. The other reason for this interest is that Dr. P’s wife Cecelia is a psychotherapist, so he really believes in a team approach. His interest and abilities have been partially responsible for attracting , in addition to Cecelia, six other counseling practices in our building here on Elm Street in Sanford. Dr. P has also been asked to serve as medical director for 3 other licensed groups dealing with the psychological needs of adults and children in the area.

Dr. P helps to provide medication management for  these patients who are under the direct supervisory care of both a psychiatrist and counselor.

  • Preventative Health and Medicine

Dr. P feels this is what the practice of medicine is all about. This is the reason for his approaches to the “physical exams” listed above as well as his interest in Anti-Aging Medicine, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement, Integrative and Nutritional Medicine, all as listed above.

  • Second Opinion Evaluations and Case Reviews

As medicine evolves these days, more and more patients are treated not as individuals, but as a group. Folks are offered treatments by many providers that are almost like “cookbook medicine” or “one size fits all medicine”. Dr. P trained at a time when he was taught and still believes that each patient is a unique individual and desires a unique approach, that is often not available in the hurried medical practices that almost resemble “medical assembly lines”. That is why dozens of patients every week come to ask Dr. P’s opinion of what they have been told or offered. Are there other options? Dr. P loves a puzzle, whether it be a diagnostic dilemma or a treatment problem, and works hard to help the patient get a better understanding of ALL the options available, not just the favorite of the insurer or the other third parties. Dr. P loves to serve as his patients’ advocate in finding and fighting for the best treatment and helping direct the patient to that care, no matter where it may be. This approach has gained Dr. P widespread acclaim from his patients and colleagues as a superb diagnostician and architect of even the most difficult patients’ medical/surgical care, who will take whatever time it takes to get answers that are needed to proceed with their care or evaluation.

  • Allergy Testing and Evaluation

Dr. P has allergies and asthma himself, so patients with these problems are especially near and dear to his heart. Dr. P is quite adept at knowing both how to evaluate and treat allergic diseases. He works closely with allergists in the southeast United States for the difficult cases.

  • Joint Injections

Dr. P has evaluated and injected and or aspirated (drained) problem joints due to injury, inflammation and/or disease for the 35+ years he has been in practice. His patients sing his praises about his ability to often localize and treat the problems giving prompt relief.

  • Trigger Point Injections

A trigger point is a localized area of muscle that causes pain in a remote area when the muscle is firmly pressed on. The term ‘trigger point’ was coined in 1942 by Dr. Janet Travell, who served as John F. Kennedy’s personal physician. She proposed a new term: myofascial, the combination of muscle and fascia. She proposed that a trigger point is a focal hyperirritability in muscle that can modulate central nervous system functions. Trigger points are often tender, firm knots in the muscles that when pushed, can feel as small as a pea or as large as a walnut – embedded within the muscle tissue. The pain one feels from pressing on a trigger point usually radiates in a region that is away from the trigger point. A trigger point injection involves the injection of medication directly into the trigger point. Trigger point injections can be used to treat a number of conditions including fibromyalgia, tension headache, and myofascial pain syndrome. Dr. P has been doing trigger point injections for more than 25 years.

  • Skin Procedures

Dr. P performs many in-office minor surgical procedures involving the skin and skin problems. He utilizes cryosurgical techniques and equipment. He also uses radiofrequency equipment for skin biopsies (skin cancer biopsies, etc.), and removal of “lumps and bumps” (warts, moles, skin tags, etc). He drains and treats abscesses of the skin, as well as opening thrombosed hemorrhoids. He performs simple repairs from lacerations and the like. If you have a skin lesion or skin problems (rashes, pigment issues, hair or nail issues) that need treatment/removal, call or write to Dr. P to get his opinion and recommendation as to how to deal with this in his office.
