He’s been a Certified Natural Health Practitioner for 30 years and a naturopathic doctor for 15 years, a senior-level FAA Senior Airman Medical Examiner and HIMS provider. Dr. Patterson is board-certified in family medicine and maintains his advanced credentials with continuing education. Dr. Patterson has accepted physicians nurse practitioners and PAs from medical centers across the eastern United States who come to this practice to have him serve as as an instructor and preceptor.

Nicole Ahlers, FNP-C, and Martha Bischof, FNP-C, to Back to Basics Medical Practice
We are truly blessed and excited to welcome two caring, compassionate, and experienced nurse practitioners to our Back to Basics Medical Practice family: Nicole Ahlers, FNP-C, and Martha Bischof, FNP. Both providers bring a deep commitment to patient-centered care, a heart for serving others, and a like-minded approach that aligns beautifully with the mission and values of our practice.
Nicole Ahlers, FNP-C
Nicole Ahlers, FNP-C, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Duke University. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, Nicole spent more than 10 years as a registered nurse specializing in labor and delivery, postpartum care, and women’s health. Caring for women and their families throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding parts of her career, and that experience continues to shape her compassionate approach to patient care.
Nicole has always had a strong interest in functional medicine and believes that the best healthcare begins by identifying and addressing the root cause of disease rather than simply treating symptoms. She blends evidence-based medicine with nutrition, lifestyle modifications, hormone optimization, and preventive care to help patients achieve lasting health and wellness.
Her approach is holistic, patient-centered, and collaborative. Nicole believes every patient deserves to be heard, educated, and empowered to make informed decisions about their health. She values patient autonomy and partners with each person to develop personalized treatment plans that reflect their individual goals, values, and preferences.
Nicole enjoys caring for patients of all ages and has special interests in women’s health, hormone optimization, thyroid disorders, weight management, metabolic health, preventive medicine, and functional medicine. She is honored to serve the Sanford community alongside Dr. Robert Patterson and the Back to Basics Medical Practice team.
Martha Bischof, FNP-C
Martha Bischof, FNP, has been serving patients in healthcare for more than a decade. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and practices as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Throughout her nursing career, Martha has gained valuable experience in behavioral health, urology, oncology, primary care, and the management of both acute and chronic medical conditions.
Martha shares the same patient-centered philosophy as the Back to Basics team: treating every person like family. She believes in building meaningful relationships with her patients and creating individualized treatment plans that meet each person’s unique needs.
With a passion for holistic and personalized care, Martha enjoys incorporating lifestyle medicine and alternative approaches into her practice. She has a special interest in how biological, psychological, and social factors work together to influence overall health and well-being. Her goal is to empower patients to improve their health, prevent disease, and achieve lasting wellness.
